Assessment
To qualify for the degree of Master of Philosophy in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, students must successfully complete all components of the 10-month programme, comprising both taught modules and research skills elements.
To obtain the MPhil, students must achieve:
- a weighted average of 60% or greater over the taught modules component; and
- no less than 50% in any one of the eight taught modules; and
- a weighted average of 60% or greater over the research skills elements of the course.
The programme consists of eight taught modules and four research skills elements, all of which are compulsory.
Taught Modules (50%): Students take eight taught modules, of which at least six must be 5BX (core EEE) modules, and up to two may be selected from other approved options. Each module contributes 6.25% to the overall mark (50% collectively). Assessment methods vary between modules and may include written examinations, coursework, and practical assignments.
The Research Skills Elements (50%):
- Researcher Development Course (6.25%): evaluated through written coursework and an oral presentation.
- Research Seminar Course (6.25%): assessed through concise written summaries (approximately 400 words each) of attended seminars, together with a short presentation on one selected seminar topic.
- Research Project Dissertation (32.5%): assessed through the submission of a dissertation of no more than 15,000 words.
- Research Project Presentation (5%): assessed through the delivery of an oral presentation presented in a research conference format.
The MPhil will be awarded as Pass or Distinction. A Pass requires satisfaction of all minimum marks listed above. Students who achieve an exceptional performance (i.e., an average of at least 75% over the eight taught modules and an average of at least 75% over the four research skills elements) will be awarded a Distinction. Cases of marginal failure will be dealt with individually by the Examiners. In cases of marginal failure, candidates may be required to undertake a viva voce (oral examination).
